Why I Built Awesome Expression

“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” – G.K. Chesterton
Short Story…
One day I just realized I spend a ton of time on "hobbies" that I never share with anyone, so I made a resolution to build a website to at least showcase to myself products of my (wasted) youth. Then I realized exactly how much youth I actually wasted. I do awesome stuff... for nothing. Awesome. |
Long Story...
Do you know any overachievers? Like those annoying people with an awesome list of accomplishments on their 100+ page CV? I know quite a few, and unfortunately am not one of them. This sense of under-achievement was most acute during my years of education. I used to wonder how classmates with these super CVs find the time to “achieve” all these “things”: chairmanship of an important society, medal for some famous race, performance at the Carnegie Hall... However they managed it, personally I am just reaching that stage in life when, looking back, I start to wonder where all my time went. Am I just a nobody who accomplished nothing in life? No, that’s not true, I refuse to believe this! Am I awesome? Or... not?
This self-actualization of being a common ranter who is no longer young and not that awesome naturally caused a bit of angst. It was a pre-midlife crisis! Finally getting fed up with my own ranting about my fleeting youth, I started building Awesome Expression to organize and document all the little “CV-unfriendly” yet most awesome things I did over the years.
It is like spring-cleaning turned treasure hunt. As I was digging through my dusty old works lying in a corner of my heart, I was constantly surprised by my younger self: I did THAT at THAT age? Like, how much time and energy was I willing to dedicate to a bunch of flimsy pencil drawings and cheesy lyrics that never got me an Ivy League scholarship, a gold medal, a chairmanship, or high-flying career?
So I sat for a good while marveling at my own awesome youth:
I did all these... with nothing to gain?! And loved every moment of it?
And the necessary conclusion is:
If I could do these then, what is there that I can't do now?! If I was so awesome then, how can I not be awesome now?!
Thus I realize I am truly blessed.
Welcome to Awesome Expression - a home that reminds me of who I am (read Who is this (awesome) nobody); a home that will need continuous work, to remind me of who I can be. I hope Awesome Expression will give you a glimpse of the most awesome of Expression… and also of yourself. For passion is the universal language of AWESOMENESS.
Stay awesome,
Expression
