“Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth.” – Fyodor Dostoevsky
Happy Menu:
On Being Happy
Do you know I was a cynic?
“You mean IS a cynic?”
Oh, is it THAT obvious?
Fine, this cynic also happens to be a ranter, and ranting on happiness no less. Awesome (and awkward)? Yeah, but happiness has always been a serious affair. How does one find happiness? Isn’t this the question asked by every religion and philosophy since the dawn of human history? We all want to be happy darn it! But to be honest, I think the bigger question is: Do we humans deserve to be happy?
Yes, I really am a hard-core cynic. But I truly think we first need to ponder this question before we are qualified to ask the other. I don’t believe in entitlement! Do you believe humans deserve to be happy? A lot of people ask why God, or whatever being happens to be hovering in the air as they know it, allow pain and suffering in this world, but I find that pretty lame when it is us humans who choose to hate, deceive, hurt, cheat, betray, and kill each other. Blame is LAME! It is unfortunate to fall seriously ill, but it is much worse to be abandoned by one’s spouse when it happens. It is unfortunate to encounter a drought and poor harvest, but it is much worse when villagers start to rob and later, devour each other. We create the worst of our sufferings. Blame is LAME! So I ask again, do you truly believe humans deserve to be happy?
This is such an unhappy question. Whether we deserve it or not, we still pine for happiness, right? Nonetheless, this question is necessary because happiness can only come after unhappiness. You cannot be truly happy unless you know what it is like to be unhappy. Happiness is all about appreciation, and true happiness is about appreciation of the Truth, however unhappy and inconvenient it may be. If you believe humans deserve to be happy, they can only be happy because they have earned it. If you believe humans do not deserve to be happy, they can only be happy through grace – an undeserved gift.
So you see, in asking the bigger question, one shall find the answer to the other.
I’m not here to give you a self-help rant: I don’t get paid! ...Alright you don’t get paid for listening to my rants either, so I guess we’re good. The bottom line is, I cannot help you, just as you cannot help me. Every human owes it to himself to search for Truth and Happiness. It is an awesome journey that has to be trod individually.
And if one is sincere in finding the Truth, Truth will eventually find you.
Seriously happy,
