The song is inspired by the Chinese Valentine's Day, also known as the Double Seven Festival. Legend has it that a fairy (seventh daughter of Heaven) known as Weaver Maid descended from Heaven. She fell in love and married the Cowherd, a mere mortal. Their love was forbidden by the Court of Heaven, and they were separated by the Silver River (Milky Way). Every year on July 7, magpies would form a bridge over the river to reunite the star-crossed lovers... just for one day.
